Textron Aviation is promoting the AT-6 Wolverine as a dedicated platform to intercept long-range, one-way attack drones, such as the Iranian kamikaze Shahed-136.

The Shahed-136 has been widely used in Ukraine, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. These drones, launched in large numbers, have challenged the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of existing air defense systems.

In Russia and Ukraine, for example, military forces are already working to adapt their light aircraft (including civilian planes) to serve as drone interceptors.

While effective in some cases, improvised platforms lack survivability, sensor integration, and weapon systems optimized for drone interception.

Modernizing commercial aircraft for air defense missions presents operational risks and limitations, especially in contested environments, according to Textron.

With this in mind, the company is promoting the AT-6 Wolverine for this role. Textron emphasized that the aircraft was designed from the outset for military use, with battlefield survivability and mission versatility in mind.

“The Wolverine already integrates modern sensors and weapon control systems. It supports over 66 payload configurations, making it suitable for a variety of missions—from UAV patrols to light strikes and close air support,” said a Textron representative cited by Defence Blog.

Textron stated that the robust design, short takeoff capability, and cost-effectiveness of the Wolverine make it a viable option for emerging drone defense strategies worldwide.

Beyond anti-drone operations, the company emphasized that the aircraft’s modular design allows it to perform a wide range of missions, ensuring it remains fully operational and relevant even when there are no drone threats.
